In 1965, Pocky was sold under the name of Chocoteck as a biscuit stick coated with chocolate. This was later changed to “Pocky”. It was named after the Japanese onamatopoetic word for the sound Pocky makes when it is bitten, pokkin (ポッキン).

Pocky was an instant hit with Japanese teenages and within the first two years, it had brought in sales of 30 billion yen.

Due to the success of the original “Chocolate Pocky”. Ezaki Glico introduced variations of Pocky. The “Almond Pocky was released in 1971 then the “Strawberry Pocky in 1977. Other variations of the Pocky are milk, mousse, green tea and coconut flavoured coatings. They have also introduced a dark chocolate and “mature” version called “Men’s Pocky” and themed Pocky.
